B.O.M. 2023

Vanaf januari (maar door enthousiasme iets eerder) gaan we beginnen met een B.O.M., maar je zou het ook een Mystery Quilt kunnen noemen, want niemand weet wat het blok is. De bedoeling is dat er in het lopende jaar verschillende technieken langs komen. Iedereen heeft al verschillende dingen gemaakt en heeft dus ook de kennis en ervaring. Het is fijn dat je dat met elkaar kunt delen. Dus het doel is leren en uitwisselen van kennis.

Wat zit er in? EPP en FPP, manieren van applicatie, ronde vormen etc. Maar ook afwerking. Zet je alles aan elkaar, of doe je "quilt to go".

Iedere maand zet ik de informatie op deze site met daarbij verschillende linkjes van you tube filmpjes of informatie die je op pinterest kunt vinden. Dit is handig, want iedereen kan aan de B.O.M. meedoen. Zou je willen aanschuiven bij de Bee, er zijn nog plaatsen voor een avond-bee. Mail even via het contactformulier op deze site.

Last year we started a quiltbee. There was a question about learning more techniques. So, we started with a B.O.M. I really should call it mystery quilt, because I'm the only one who knows what's coming next. I planned to start on the 1ste of januari, but the group couldn't wait. So one block was given a bit earlier.

 

On the first of the month I'll put the block on this site. You can print the description and template, it is free for every one to use. The tutorials I found on you tube will help you allong the way.

Blok1 Dresden Plate

DECEMBER / JANUARI 2023

Dit is de eerste in de serie van 12 blokken. De quilt wordt ongeveer 1.40 bij 2.00 meter. Alles kun je natuurlijk aanpassen naar eigen wens. Je kunt alles handquilten, maar grotendeels ook met de naaimachine werken.

Blok 1 Dresden Plate. Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch, dit is inclusief toeslag van een 1/4 inch.

Wat het je nodig:

• 1 lap van 10,5 bij 10,5 inch stof.

• 12 lapjes in 2 of meer verschillende kleuren.

Maat 2,5 inch bij 5,5 inch.

• Malletje A of B

• Snijmat, snijmes, potlood, pen

• schaar

• Naald en draad

Knip het malletje A ( je hebt een reserve) uit en snijd 12 lapjes in de vorm van de mal. Daarvoor leg ik het papiertje op de stof en ga er met een frixtion pen omheen. Je kunt de 1/4 inch erna nog even apart opzetten, als je dat zelf handig vindt. Ga je meer Dresden plate maken, dan is het handig zelf een malletje te maken van paterno plaat.

Knip de blaadjes uit de stof. Naai de 12 blaadjes aan elkaar, strijk plat. Strijk de toeslag van de punten naar binnen en ook plat.

​

Tip: Per blad heb je 2,5 inch bij 5 inch nodig, maar leg je er twee tegenover elkaar op de stof, dan heb je minder afval

​

Het vierkantje van 10,5 bij 10,5 vouw je 2 x dubbel om het midden te vinden. Plaats de Dresden plate in het midden van dit vierkant en naai op de achtergrond vast.

Er is ook nog een andere manier.

​

Knip malletje B uit. Snijd de stofjes naar maat. Ook hier verlies je minder stof om twee malletjes tegenover elkaar op de stof te leggen.

​

Wat je nu eerst doet is bovenin (het breedste stuk) met de achterkant in het midden tegen elkaar leggen en dit op een 1/4 inch dicht naaien. Heb je dit gedaan, dan daar je de goede kant weer naar buiten en strijk je het plat. Dit doe je met alle 12 en zet ze dan aan elkaar. Nu hoef je de punten niet meer naar binnen te vouwen en kun je de Dresden plate meteen op de stof naaien. Je kunt eventueel nog een cirkel in het midden plaatsen als je dat mooier vindt.

Een Dresden plate is zeker ook met English paper piecing te maken als je de blaadjes met de punten gebruikt!

Block 1 Dresden Plate

DECEMBER / JANUARY 2023

This is the first in the series of 12 blocks. The quilt is about 1.40 by 2.00 meters. Of course, you can adjust everything to your own liking.

You can hand-quilt everything, but for the most part also work with the sewing machine.

Block 1 Dresden Plate. 

Block is 10.5 by 10.5 inches, this includes a 1/4 inch seam allowance. 

What do you need:

• 1 piece of 10.5 by 10.5 inch fabric.

• 12 patches in 2 or more different colours. Size 2.5 inches by 5.5 inches.

• Mould A or B

• Cutting mat, cutting knife, pencil, pen

• Scissors

• Needle and thread

Cut out template A (you have a spare) and cut 12 pieces of fabric in the shape of the template. I put the template on the back of the fabric and use a frixtionpen or a pencil. Because I use a sewing machine I have 1/4 inch foot. When I don't use the machine, I also cut out the 1/4 inch seam, so I can use the template to draw that on the fabric to. I'm sure there are easier ways of doing it (You can always tell us!). If you are going to make more Dresden plates, it is useful to make a template from paterno plate.

​Cut the leaves from the fabric. Sew the 12 leaves together, iron flat.

Tip: Per template you need 2.5 inches by 5 inches, but if you place two opposite against each other on the fabric, you have less waste.

 

There is also another way.

Cut out template B. Cut the fabrics to size. Here, too, you lose less fabric.

What you do first is, at the top (the widest piece) with the back in the middle against each other and sew this together at a 1/4 inch.

(I wonder if this is understandable, you better watch the you tube film)   If you have done this, then you take the right side out against and iron it flat. You do this with all 12 leaves and then put them together. Now you no longer have to fold the points inwards and you can immediately sew the Dresden plate on the fabric. You can place a circle in the middle if you like that.

Blok 2 EPP, English Paper Piecing

JANUARI 2023 BLOK 2

Blok 2 Hexagon bloem. English paper piecing. Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch, dit is inclusief ¼ inch toeslag.

​

Wat het je nodig:

• 1 lap van 10,5 bij 10,5 inch stof ( als je het patroon rechtstreeks op de achtergrond wil naaien.

Per hexagon heb je ongeveer 2,5 bij 2,5 inch nodig (met toeslag)

• 37 lapjes voor 37 hexagonnen. Je kunt met verschillende gekleurde stofjes werken.

• Het vel met de hexagonen. De hexagonnetjes zijn ¾ inch. Je kunt ze uitknippen of uitsnijden.

• Van paterno plaat of dik karton een mal gemaakt met de toeslag. Dit maakt het makkelijker de stof op maat knippen. Het hoeft niet zo secuur want je slaat de stof om de papieren hexagonnetjes. Je kunt snijmes met mat gebruiken of een stofschaar.

• Naald en draad.

• Eventueel nog stof voor een applicatie in het midden, borduurgaren, verschillende kleuren, naaimachinegaren verschillende kleuren.

​

Knip of snijdt de kartonnetjes van de hexagon uit. Gebruik de mal om de stof op maat uit te snijden of knippen.

​

Je naait de stof om de kartonnetjes. Op you tube vindt je ook filmpjes met de lijmmethode. Als je denkt dat het wat is dan moet je het zeker proberen. Heb je ze alle 37 klaar, dan begin je ze aan elkaar te naaien. Als je ze alle 37 genaaid hebt, kun je de kartonnetjes eruit halen. Als je het lukt vindt kun je in het midden nog een applicatie of iets borduren. Goed plat strijken. Naai de hexagonbloem met kleine steekjes op het midden van stof.

​

Je kunt eventueel ook het hele blok opvullen met hexagonnen en halve hexagonnen om tot een vierkant te komen.

​

Je kunt EPP ook met de naaimachine doen. Hier wordt een speciaal vlies voor gebruikt. Of dit in Nederland verkrijgbaar is???? Kijk hieronder naar de uitleg en is zeker nog meer te vinden.

Dagen later loop ik tegen de templates van Marti Michell aan en gaat me een lampje branden. Natuurlijk kun je het EPP verhaal op de naaimachine doen. Er is een heel assortiment van templates te koop tegenwoordig met de nodige boeken en patronen.

Block 2 EPP, English Paper Piecing

JANUARY 2023 Block 2

Block 2 Hexagon flower. English paper piecing. Block is 10.5 by 10.5 inches, this includes 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What you need:

• 1 piece of 10.5 by 10.5 inch fabric (if you want to sew the pattern directly into the background.

Per hexagon you need about 2.5 by 2.5 inches (with allowance)

• 37 papers for 37 hexagons. You can use kinds of scraps.

• The sheet with the hexagons. The hexagons are 3/4 inch. 

• From paterno plate or thick cardboard make a template with the seam allowance. If this is the first time you do paper piecing than make the allowance a bit bigger than 1/4 inch. You don't have to

cut the pieces of fabric very precise because you are going to fold the fabric around the paper hexagons. You can use cutting knife with mat or scissors.

• Needle and thread.

• Possibly fabric for an application in the middle, embroidery thread, different colors, sewing machine yarn different colors.

​

You sew the fabric around the paper hexagons. On you tube you will also find videos with the glue method. If you think it's something for you, then you should try it. Once you have all 37 of them ready, start sewing them together. If you have sewn all 37 of them, you can take out all the papers. You can embroider an application or something in the middle. Iron well flat. Sew the hexagon flower with small stitches on the center of fabric.

Blok 3, Orange Peel​

FEBRUARI 2023 Blok 3 Orange Peel. Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

​

Wat het je nodig:

•Stof voor 4 blaadjes En 2 x 4 vierkantjes met een halve ronding eruit geknipt. Als je de patronen op de stof legt dan is dit het handigst.

Je hebt dan per blok met blad ongeveer 9 bij 8 inch nodig.

•Snijmes en mat, schaar, frixionpen (of andere soort pennen) lijmpen

•Naald en draad, spelden.

De klassieke manier met spelden

Kies voor de kleuren die je wilt gebruiken. Je kunt er voor kiezen om voor de blaadjes dezelfde stof te gebruiken en voor de blokken 2 verschillende kleuren. Er zijn nog meer variaties mogelijk. Leg de template van het blad op de achterkant van de stof, gebruik een frixionpen of potlood en knip uit. Doet dit ook met de template van de blokken. Als je met de hand naait is het handig de 1/4 inch ook nog te markeren op de stof. Met de naaimachine is dat niet nodig als je een ¼ inch voetje gebruikt of een instelling voor ¼ inch hebt.

Het handigste is om een vouwtje te maken in het blad. Eerst het midden en dan de 2 maal kwart. Dat doe je ook met het uitgeknipte vierkant. Dan begin je te spelden vanuit het midden. Leg de middelste vouwtjes op elkaar en speld, de kwartvouwtjes en speld. En dan evenredig verder spelden. Nu kunnen je de delen naaien. Zie filmpjes 1 en 2 hieronder.

De klassieke manier met de lijmtechniek.

Dan kun je ook nog voor de lijmtechniek kiezen. In plaats van heel veel spelden gebruik je en lijmpen. Het volgende filmpje laat zien hoe je dit doet. Ik heb het zelf uitgeprobeerd en het heeft mijn voorkeur op spelden. Hieronder zie je hoe.

Appliqueren. 

Let op! Als je voor appliqueren kiest kun je het blaadje beter een rondom een ¼ inch kleiner maken. Je hebt dan de keuze om de zoom naar binnen te strijken, of eerst te lijmen en dan naaien of gewoon met de naald naar binnen duwen en op de stof te naaien (needle turn applique)

Je kunt ook kiezen voor return applique. Dan gebruik je dun vlies me aan een kant een plaklaag, die je naait op het blad. Zie de 2 tutorials hieronder.

Block 3, Orange Peel

FEBRUARY 2023, Block 3 Orange Peel. Block is 10.5 by 10.5 inches including a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

What do you need:

•Fabric for 4 leaves And 2 x 4 squares. You need about 9 by 8 inches per block with leave.

•Rotary cutter, mat, scissors, frixionpen (or other kind of pen) and a glue pen.

•Needle and thread, pins.

​

The classic way with pins.

Choose the colors you want to use. You can choose to use the same fabric for the leaves and 2 different colors for the blocks. There are more variations possible. Place the template of the sheet on the back of the fabric, use a frixion pen or pencil to draw the template on the fabric. Cut out. Do this also with the template of the blocks. If you sew by hand, it is useful to mark the 1/4 inch on the fabric. With the sewing machine, that's not necessary if you're using a 1/4 inch foot or have a 1/4 inch setting.

The most convenient thing is to make a fold in the leaf. First the middle and then the 2 times quarter. You can also do that with the square. Then you start pinning from the middle. Place the middle folds on top of each other and pin, the quarter folds and pin. And then continue pinning proportionally. Now you can sew the parts. See the tutorials 1 and 2 below.

The classic way with the glue pen.

You can also opt for the glue technique. Instead of a lot of pins, use a glue pen. The following video shows you how to do this. I tried it myself and it has my preference on pins. They always get stuck in my fingers.

Applique.

Please note! If you choose applique, you have to cut the leaf a 1/4 inch smaller. You then have the choice to iron or fold (needleturn applique) the seams inwards and sew it on the fabric by hand

There are more ways, like using freezer paper etc. You can also opt for return applique. Then you use fusible interfacing. In the tutorials below you see how to use that.

Blok 4 De kaartentruc

 

Maart 2023

Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

Wat het je nodig:

•Achtergrondstof en vier verschillende stofjes voor het vierkant.

•Pdf met de templates.

•Snijmes, liniaal en mat, schaar, frixionpen of potlood.

•Naald en draad, spelden.

Het is een veel gekozen blok in een quilt, leuk om te doen.

Je kunt 2 dingen doen. Je werkt met de template van de driehoeken. Of je werkt met vierkanten die je doormidden snijdt. Beide staan op de tekening.

Optie 1:

•4 verschillende stofjes voor de vierkanten en een achtergrondstof.

Je hebt van de achtergrondstof 4 grote driehoeken nodig (template A).

Daarnaast moet je van alle vier stofjes 2 grote driehoeken snijden Template A), in totaal 8. Van de kleine vierkanten (template B) heb je van de achtergrondstof 4 driehoeken nodig en van ieder vierkant 2 driehoeken.

•Snijd je template uit en teken deze over op de achterkant van de stof. Je kunt een frixionpen gebruiken maar ook een potlood. Snij alle getekende stoffen op maat.

•Zet de grote driehoeken aan elkaar volgens tekening. De goede kant naar binnen met een 1.4 inch zoom naaien. Strijk alles open en leg aan de kant en ga met de kleine driehoeken aan de slag. Hierbij hetzelfde. Teken de template over en snij uit. Naai eerst de kleine 2 driehoeken aan elkaar. Strijk plat en leg deze dan op een grote driehoek. Goede kanten tegen elkaar en naai aan elkaar. Strijk plat.

Let op het middelste vierkant bestaat alleen uit 4 kleine driehoeken. Dus 2 maal 2 driehoeken aan elkaar, platstrijken en dan een heel vierkant van maken.

Leg alles in de goede volgorde en naai per rij alles aan elkaar, strijken. De rijen nu aan elkaar naaien en strijken.

Optie 2:

•Snijd twee vierkanten achtergrondstof en snijdt deze doormidden. Snijdt 4 vierkanten van iedere stof (behalve de achtergrond stof) 1 vierkant, en snijdt deze doormidden.

•Snij 2 kleine vierkanten en snijdt deze doormidden. En van iedere andere stof (behalve de achtergrond) 1 vierkant en snijdt deze doormidden. Nu kun je alles aan elkaar gaan zetten. Uitleg zie boven.

Block 4 The Card Trick 

 

MARCH 2023

Block is 10.5 by 10.5 inch including surcharge of 1/4 inch.

What you need:

• Background fabric and four different fabrics for the square.

• PDF with the templates.

• Cutting knife, ruler and mat, scissors, frixion pen or pencil.

• Needle and thread, pins.

​

It's a much chosen block in a quilt, fun to do. You can do 2 things. You work with the template of the triangles. Or you work with squares that you cut in half. Both options are explained.

​

Option 1:

• 4 different fabrics for the squares and a back raw material. You need 4 large triangles of the background material (template A). In addition, you have to cut 2 large triangles of all four fabrics Template A), a total of 8. Of the small squares (template B) you need 4 triangles of the background fabric and 2 triangles of each square.

• Cut out your template and draw it over to the back of the fabric. You can use a frixion pen. Cut all drawn fabrics to size.

• Put the large triangles together according to drawing. Sewing the right side in with a 1.4 inch seam allowance. Then make the small triangles. Draw the template over and cut out. First, sew the small triangles together. Iron and then place it on a large triangle. Good sides against each other and sew together. Iron. Note the middle square consists only of 4 small triangles. Sew 2 times 2 triangles together, iron and then make it in to a square. Put everything in the right order and sew everything together per row, iron. Sewing the rows together and iron again.

Option 2:

Cut two squares of background fabric and cut it in half. Cut 4 squares of each fabric (except the background fabric) 1 square, and cut it in half. Cut 2 small squares and cut them in half. And of every other fabric (except the background) 1 square and cut it in half. Now you can start putting everything together. Explanation see above.

Blok 5 Heart block FPP, foundation paper piecing

 

APRIL 2023

Blok 5 Heart block FPP, foundation paper piecing. 

Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

Wat het je nodig:

•Achtergrondstof en verschillende stofjes voor het hart.

•Een vel fun-dation om het patroon op te printen of theezakjespapier om het patroon over te trekken.

•Snijmes, liniaal, een fpp-liniaal met een richel van ¼ inch. Iets wat dun en hard is om de vouw te maken. Dat kan al met een oude klantenkaart.

•Schaar, naald en draad, spelden.

FPP is eigenlijk de tegenhanger van EPP, English paper piecing. Met FPP kun je heel secuur werken en heb je kunt er veel ingewikkelde patronen heel makkelijk mee maken. En….heel fijn om restlapjes op te maken!

Het begin is eigenlijk het lastigste. Waar je vooral op moet letten is dat het blad met de tekst boven ligt en niet in spiegelbeeld. Geloof me, dat is me al wat keren gebeurd!

 

Volg de nummers op de tekening. Je naait de stofjes op de achterkant van de tekening.

Zorg dat de stofjes met toeslag groter zijn dan het blokje.

Bij de eerste stap moet je de twee stofjes met de goede kanten op elkaar leggen en dat moet op de achterkant van het vlies. Ik sla het tweede stofje altijd even terug om te zien of het past. Klopt het, zet het met een speldje vast en draai om. Naai de stofjes op de papier kant vast. Gebruik een steeklengte van 1.0 of 1.5.

Het blok bestaat uit 3 gedeelten die je aan elkaar zet en dan afmaakt om een vierkant te krijgen. Het patroon van block 5.1 is 7 inch, omdat het anders niet op een vel past. Bedenk zelf een leuke rand om op 10,5 inch te komen.

Wil je het zelf op patroon op theezakjes papier overtrekken en wel een 10,5 inch blok hebben, gebruik dan de pdf block 5.2.

Block 5 Heart block FPP, foundation paper piecing

 

APRIL 2023

Block 5 Heart block FPP, foundation paper piecing. The block is 10,5 by 10,5 inch with seam allowance.

​

What do you need:

•Background fabric and various pieces of fabric for the heart.

•A sheet of fun-dation (or another brand of foundation paper) to print the pattern. You also can use tea bag paper and trace the yourself.

•Rotary cutter, ruler, an FPP ruler with a 1/4 inch ledge. Something that is thin and hard to make the fold. This is already possible with an old customer card.

•Scissors, needle and thread, pins.

​

FPP is actually the counterpart of EPP, English paper piecing. With FPP you can work very accurately and you can make many complicated patterns very easily. And so handy for using scraps!

The beginning is actually the hardest part.

​

Where you should pay particular attention to is that the sheet with the text is above and not in mirror image. Believe me, that's happened to me a few times. Follow the numbers on the drawing. You sew the fabrics on the back of the drawing. Make sure that the pieces with allowance are larger than the block.

​

In the first step you have to put two pieces of fabric with the right sides on top of each other and that has to be on the back of the fpp-paper. The block for A1 is easy, you can see if it is bigger then the block with enough seam allowance. The second pieces, you always have to fold back, to see if it fits. Does it fit, then you sew with a stitch length of 1.0 / 1.5 on the paper.

​

The whole block consists of 3 parts that you put together and then finish to get a square. The pattern of block 5.1 finished at 7 inches, because otherwise it will not fit on a sheet when you print. To finish at 10,5 inch, you just haven to make a border around it.

If you want to draw it on paper, you can choose the pfd block 5.2. That will finish completed 10,5 inch.

Blok 6 Antiek Mozaïek blok.

Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

Wat het je nodig:

• Achtergrondstof en verschillende stofjes.

• De templates voor het blok.

• Snijmes, liniaal, schaar

• Naald en draad, spelden.

Er zijn 3 pdf’s met template, ook hier kun je weer kiezen tussen de traditionele manier (1 pdf) of fpp, deze laatste bestaat uit 2 delen.

Het ziet er moeilijk uit, maar het is een leuk blok om te maken. Je kunt ervoor kiezen om met twee kleuren te werken of meer. Het zijn allemaal half square triangels, dus driehoekjes die een vierkant vormen. Je kunt vanuit het midden beginnen, maar het is makkelijker als je ze in 4 banen maakt en dan aan elkaar zet.

There are 3 pdfs with template for this block. You can choose between the traditional way ( 1 pdf) or fpp (2 pdf’s). It looks hard, but it's a fun block to make. You can choose to work with two colors or more. They are all half square triangles. You can start from the middle, but it's easier if you make them in 4 rows and then put them together.

Blok 9 Gedraaide Log Cabin

Traditioneel of FPP Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

 

Wat het je nodig:

  • Achtergrondstof en verschillende stofjes voor de bloem.

  • De templates voor het blok.

  • Snijmes, liniaal, ad a ¼ inch ruler, schaar

  • Naald en draad, spelden of naaimachine

  • Strijkijzer

  • Lichtbox.

  • Fun-dation papier of iets anders waar je FPP op maakt. Voor de 7 inch versie print heb je 1 vel nodig. De 10 inch versie als je het zelf op papier tekent of je het niet erg vindt om 2 vellen te printen.

What do you need:

  • Iron.

  • Lightbox.

  • Fun-dation paper or anything else you make FPP on. For the 7 inch version print you need 1 sheet. The 10 inch version if you draw it yourself on paper or you don't mind printing 2 sheets.

Wat het je nodig:

  • 6 verschillende stofjes als je alle templates een eigen kleur wil geven.

  • Rolmes, liniaal, schaar

  • Voor fpp 2 vellen om op te printen.

  • Naald en draad, spelden.

 

Je kunt dit blok op twee manieren maken. De traditionele manier met de onderdelen die je aan elkaar naait of je gebruikt de fpp methode.

Mariners Compass Block is 10.5 by 10.5 inches including 1/4 inch surcharge.

 

What it you need:

  • 6 different fabrics if you want to give all templates their own        color.

  • Rotary cutter, ruler, scissors

  • For fpp 2 sheets to print on.

  • Needle and thread, pins.

 

You can create this block in two ways. The traditional way with the parts you sew together or you use the fpp method.

Block 12 Revers Applique / Mola Flower block. Blok is 10,5 bij 10,5 inch inclusief toeslag van ¼ inch.

Wat het je nodig:

  • Achtergrondstof en verschillende stofjes voor de bloem.

  • De templates voor het block.

  • Schaar, klein schaartje.

  • Naald en rijgscharen, spelden

  • Dun naaldje of applique naald met bijpassend garen.

 

Blok 12 kun je ook reverse applique noemen, maar hoe meer lagen je op deze manier aanbrengt hoe meer je eigenlijk kunt spreken over Mola of Kuna.

What it you need:

  • Background fabric and different fabrics for the flower.

  • The template for the block.

  • Scissors, small scissors.

  • Needle and basting thread, pins

  • Thin needle or applique needle with matching thread.

 

Block 12 can also be called reverse applique, but the more layers you apply in this way, the more you can actually speak of Mola or Kuna.
